The Faroe Islands 2013

This summer from July 18th to July 23rd 2013, Himmerland return to Faroe Island with great pleasure. The band performed it’s first real concerts on Faroe Islands during the summer 2010, and now we are looking very much forward to show how much has happend to our music since then!

Summartónar 2013 is a festival for new music arranged by Felagið Føroysk Tónaskøld (Association of Faroese Composers), and held at venues and concert halls all over the islands.

The festival is running the whole summer from June 25th to August 17th 2013, and it introduces its audience to a large number of outstanding local composers and musicians, as well as quite a few names from outside the Faroe Islands.

This time Himmerland might be performing mostly in Tórshavn, the capitol of Faroe Islands, but also the island Nolsoy, and the G! Festival in Gøta, will be visited by the traveling quintet.

This year will offer concerts at venues and festivals in large parts of the world. During the last 30 years, I have been performing a lot of concerts around the world, and the next year or so is not going to be a exception. I am going to perform at very different places, such as Vestervig Kirke in Thy, in the Northern part of Denmark, Nordens Hus on Faroe Islands, Kaustinen Folk Festival in Finland, and Carrefour Mondial de l’Accordéon in Montmagny, Québec, Canada.

The concerts will be performed together with musicians from Denmark and abroad, and the tunes and songs will both traditional, but especially original material.

During the next year or so I am so lucky to perform in Denmark, Germany, The Faroe Islands, Finland, Italy, England, Canada and Australia.

I will appear on several new CDs in 2013 both as a special guest, and with my own bands.

26 Nov

Danish Music Awards - Folk– It is a huge honor and with joy that I congratulate this years winner of Danish Music Award Folk Prize of Honor, musician, composer, project manager, radio host, politician and SO much more – MORTEN ALFRED HØIRUP!

Those were the words when spokesman Henrik Jansberg from the Danish Music Award (Danish “Grammy”) -commitee revealed this years winner. And the winner – that was me myself – was very happy and smiling while concluding that working with roots and folk music has grown more popular since the 80’s when a girl friend had called me a “kind of out cast”, when I told her that I was making my living from playing folk music.

I am so lucky that I have had the privilege of recieving all in all eight Danish Music Awards during the years, including one as “Danish Folk Composer of the Year 2004”.

KARL SKAARUP, KRISTIAN BUGGE & MORTEN ALFRED HØIRUP ON THE ROAD!

21 Jan
Skaarup, Bugge & Høirup 2012

Skaarup, Bugge & Høirup 2012

When Karl Skaarup (89 years old), Kristian Bugge (33 years old) and I (51 years old), gets on stage together, we are speaking about a rather unusual cooperation between three generations of Danish folk musicians.

Thy-musician Karl Skaarup (accordion) has played for dances and parties for more than 80 years, Kristian Bugge (fiddle) is one of our most powerful and buisy younger folk musicians, and I myself has been traveling with my music all over the world.

Together the three of us are playing for traditional Thy-dances in city halls, culture houses and other venues around Denmark (See: “Tourdates”). Skaarup has been playing for dances ever since he was 4 years old, Bugge has specialized in traditional dance tunes and musical dialects from all over the country, and I grew up playing in my fathers dance band during the 80ties and the 90ties.
