Koncert i Fort Warden State Park

Concert in Fort Warden State Park

Lydom, Bugge & Høirup is going to go to the Wild West this summer, to teach at The Festival of American Fiddle Tunes. Here is how the festival introduces it self:

“Each year, Centrum’s Festival of American Fiddle Tunes welcomes hundreds of players of traditional American music to Fort Worden State Park in Port Townsend, Washington, for a full week of immersion workshops, band labs, tutorials, open jams, parties, and spontaneous gatherings.”

In the very beginning of July 2015, Sonnich Lydom (accordion, harmonica), Kristian Bugge (violin) and I will be going there to teach traditional Danish music. There we will meet people like the Seattle based fiddler, Ruthie Dornfeld, and Métis fiddler Jamie Fox, from Montana, plus a few other good colleagues, and we are already looking so much forward to introduce our brand new album for everybody there. Keep an eye on the trio at: www.facebook.com/traddk

Here is, by the way, a link to a video featuring Lydom, Bugge & Høirup.

Adrianna Ciccone 2015

Adrianna Ciccone, Boston 2015

During the lastest 10 or 15 years, musicians from around the world has recorded music that I have composed. We are talking about bands from Scotland (Vingården), England (The Ring, Vingården), Finland (Danish 7/8), Germany (Begravelsesmarch til en Kær Ven) and Switzerland (Bjørnekæden). I feel very humble about this, and proud at the same time.

Reasonly the band Beyond the Pale from Texas has recorded ‘Gæstebud/Feast’ for their album ‘The Music Plays Me’, and the Canadian group Celtara has recorded ‘Bjørnekæden’ for their album ‘Until the Morning Light’. Also the German band Fei Scho recorded ‘Gæstebud/Feast’ on the album ‘Vom Landler zum Funk’ in 2012, and another German band, Fiunferley, just recorded ‘Bjørnekæden’ on their brand new album “Rooted”.

Some of the latest bands to record Høirup’s music, is the Finnish band Häävi that did releas their debut album in 2013, on which they perform a very nice version of ‘Gæstebud/Feast’, and the Canadaian band Thereafter from Vancouver BC, who did record their own beautiful version of ‘Bjørnekæden’, for their debut album, Ceremony, which came out in the spring 2013.

In 2015 the young American fiddler, Adrianna Ciccorone, released her debut album, produced by Bruce Molsky. The album contain the tune “Lys Polska”, that I composed and recorded with Harald Haugaard long time ago.

The latest recording is by the young Canadian band Aerialists who recorded their own version of ‘Bjørnekæden’, and I am so much looking forward to see what’s next.

I am of course very happy that bands around the world can use my compositions, it’s great to hear their way of doing the tunes, and wondeful when the music goes it’s own way, and meets a new and larger audience. Thank you!

Udsigten fra mit køkkenvindue om morgnen 1. juledag 2014

The view from my kitchen window on Christmas morning 2014

2014 was a good year! My family and I are well and healthy, and I have had the privilege to work with good people on exciting projects, including people from ROSA (The Danish Rock Council).

I also happen to play in a few bands who releases albums and travel with their music around the world, and I am very happy to be active in the board of DJBFA, Denmark’s largest composer association. Finally – as part of my engagement with ROSA – I am the editor at the online radio station, Radiofolk.dk, that are broadcasting roots and folk music around the clock.

I am so much looking forward to the new year, which will contain quite some touring with my bands Himmerland, Lydom, Bugge & Høirup, and Jensen & Bugge + Høirup. We will perform in Denmark, The faroe Islands, Germany, Finland, Great Britain, The US and Australia. 2015 will also produce several album releases, some pretty intense strategi planning in DJBFA, and a lot of radio work. Together these tasks creates a challenging and very exiting year for which I am very grateful.

I sincerely wish my friends, collegues and collaborators a Merry Christimas and a Happy New Year! I am looking forward to meeting you along the way!

In the beginning of March 2015, Himmerland will be going to Australia for the third year in a row. This time we are looking very much forward to introduce our very new album, The Spider in the Fiddle at a few folk clubs and two great festivals in only two weeks. We are very proud of the new album, and the first reviews has started ticking in. The host of the Danish Broadcasting Association, Jørgen Bøgen introduced the album with this statement”

“To be honest with you, it has been a very long time since I have been excited about instrumental folk music they way I have hearing the new Himmerland-CD”

Besides the festival gigs, there will be time for a few club gigs, including one at South Coast Folk Club in Adelaide, before the band travel back home to prepare for concerts in Finland and at The Faroe Islands.

DMA FOLK ALL STARS DANCE BAND 2014, by the Norwegian photographer, Knut Utler

You take six folk musicians who never really shared a stage all together, and you ask them to come to Copenhagen, traveling from every corner of the country in late November 2014. Then you put them on stage in Copenhagen Jazzhouse, right after they gave away the awards at the Danish Music Award Folk (Danish “Grammy”) Galla Show, asking them to play for a one hour long traditional dance, and The DMA Folk All Stars Dance Band is born! In the band, collected by fiddler Kristian Bugge, was/is:

Kristian Bugge: Violin, Mette Kathrine Jensen: Chromatic Accordion, Sonnich Lydom: Diatonic accordion, harmonicas, Anders Ringgaard: Trombone, Malene Beck: Piano & me myself on guitar.

We hope that the band will be booked to perform at some of next summer’s festivals in and outside Denmark.

Jensen & Bugge + Høirup i Frederiksberg Have november 2014

Jensen & Bugge + Høirup in Frederiksberg Have, Copenhagen November 2014

Borcher Madsen was born in 1815 in Væggerløse on the Danish Island, Falster. When he grew up, he married and moved to Nykøbing where he worked as “Musik Direktør”, Independed musician, for many years until his death in 1897.

We know around 100 compositions by Borcher Madsen, and inspired by Frede Nielsen from Højreby Spillemandslaug, the duo “Jensen & Bugge” – Mette Kathrine Jensen (accordion) and Kristian Bugge (violin) – picked out 16 tunes, which we have arranged for violin, accordion and guitar, and recorded at the Soundscape Studio, Louise Nipper’s place in Frederiksberg, Copenhagen.

We are talking about a number of pretty different dance tunes, pollas, waltzes, hopsas, menuets, reels and more, titled “Slid din tid” (Wear your time), “Efterårsvalsen” (The Autumn Waltz), “Vilhelmine Polka”, “Fanny Polka”, “Grevindens Menuet” (Countess Minuet), and so on.

The album will be released in the summer of 2015, on the 200 year anniversary for Borcher Madsen’s birth, together with a music collection of tunes from Borcher Madsen’s repertoire, and will be followed by a number of concerts around in Denmark.

As early as 27th of November 2015 Jensen & Bugge + Høirup will play a concert containing a number of Borche Madsen tunes at Riksscenen in Oslo, Norway, and on the 29th of November, the trio will meet up with Sonnich Lydom (accordion, harmonica), Malene Beck (piano) and Anders Ringaard (trombone), to perform a traditional dance with music from Thy, in the very northern part of Denmark. This will happen in the very center of Copenhagen, at Jazzhouse, where the Danish Music Award Folk Galla Party is being celebrated.

jensen & Bugge + Høirup’s cooperation was taking its beginning a few years back, and the trio has already performed a number of dances and concerts in Denmark and French-Canada. You can follow the trio on this page or at www.jensen-bugge.dk.

Photo: Lieve Bousauw got me from a funny angel on stage at Goiikoorts Int. Volksmuziekfestival, Belgium, this summer

The fall is my favorit time of the year, I love the fresh and clear air, the changing wether and the many beautiful colours, especially when I am traveling, so that I can experience the fall in different versions.

During the coming 2-3 month, I’ll be touring in Denmark and Scotland with my band, Himmerland. I have been looking forward to that for a long time, especially the trip to Orkney where they have a harsh nature, and a fantastic envirement, that Iam pretty crazy about (Not to mention their malt whiskey).

In October I am going to The English Folk Expo in Manchester, England, and to Womex in santiago de Compostela in Galicia, Spain, to promote and lobby for Danish roots- and folk music, and for our new online radio, Radiofolk.dk.

In the beginning of November, Himmerland goes on a tour in Denmark, to introduce our new album, “The Spider in the Fiddle”, containing 4 old Danish songs in very new arrangements, and a number of new compositions by the band members. Right while I am writing this, we are mixing the new album, and it sound very promising, really! Follow the process on www.himmerland.it.

American Café OrchestraNow we have arrived in Helsinki where we rehearse a bit before taking the train 600 kilometers up north to Haapavesi where the sun never dissapear at this time a year.

I am traveling with two old friends, the American violinist, Ruthie Dornfeld, and the Finnish bass player, flute player and jews harp player, Tapani Varis, people that I have performed with during many years, and with whom I released the album “Nightmare Polka” in 2012.

Our trio is called ACO (American Café orchestra), and here in Finland, we are going to teach at ‘Haapavesi Folk Music Course’ and perform at ‘Haapavesi Folk Festival’. It is great to play with Ruthie and Tapani and to re-discover how fantastic and inspiring musicians they are – they can make my compositions blossom, and that is just great to experience.

My 13 year old son, Carl Alfred, is traveling with us, he is going to participate in Antti Järvelä’s band playing class – taht is garantied to be a lot of hard work, and a lot of fun for the lad. See more at: www.haapavesifolk.com
